So so so often we feel selfish.
We feel selfish spending an extra hour in bed when there are dishes to wash. We feel selfish spending money on ourselves when we have a daughter to clothe. We feel selfish learning a new skill when we need to help our son with homework. We feel selfish when we go for a massage when our husband has a sore lower back. And so often we decide not to be selfish because family, friends and work ‘should’ come first.
But we need to be selfish every now and then – it is necessary.
I regularly convince myself that I don’t need an extra hour of sleep, I don’t need another jersey or pair of shoes, I don’t need to know another skill or take an hour to pamper myself – I’ve got too many responsibilities and adulting to do. And then, I end up with circles under my eyes, no clean jerseys and really tensed shoulders – and I start to get irritable with the people close to me and all I needed to do from the beginning was just be selfish!
August is Women’s month – and if there was ever a month we needed to be selfish and make ourselves a priority it is August.
So, go ahead, take the time and read the unopened book you’ve had on your bed side table all year, buy your self a jersey, book yourself on the next quilting course, book yourself in for a massage and just be selfish.
It really really is necessary!
