There are a few things, especially as women, that make us think twice before booking a massage. We worry about taking most, if not all, our clothes off for complete strangers. We become extremely self conscious to have someone work so closely with us exposing unshaven legs, cellulite, thread veins, tan lines, chipped nail varnish – we don’t want to be judged.
But here’s the thing, massage therapists really – and I mean really – don’t mind.
Unshaven legs? We really don’t mind
I often get apologies from ladies for unshaven/unwaxed legs – most of the times I haven’t noticed. I am concentrating on your muscles and soft tissue, making sure my pressure is perfect for you and working out all the tension from your tired, over worked legs and feet. The only time I will take notice of your hair is if there is a lot more than normal and need extra oil as a lubricant so I don’t pull the hair and hurt you – and this only really implies to men. The same goes for spider veins, moles, cellulite, chipped varnish, dry skin, etc, we really really don’t care. We do, however, care about varicose veins, they need to be avoided for health reasons, so make sure you mention it to your therapist if you have on!
Your underwear? We really don’t mind.
To be honest we don’t see your underwear long enough to take notice. They’re there to tuck the towel in when we work on your back, but other than that you might get a few little oil splatters on them, so make sure you don’t wear any of your favourites.
Your butt? We really don’t mind.
Massage therapists get excited about massage, we get excited when you come in with a real pain and we love finding the origin of that pain and helping to relieve it. A lot of the times the origin of pain comes from places like your gluteal muscles, your armpits and your feet. We don’t see it as your butt, we see your gluteal muscles as the target to pain relief!
Your weight? We really don’t mind
Once you’re on my massage bed, you are just a body. A human body. I don’t see your cellulite, or fat pockets. I see a body. No adjectives. I see your muscles, your tension, your joints, your bones and that’s what I focus on. The massage table is a judgement free zone, and in order for you to relax, you must know that your body is not scrutinized.
Your snoring? We really don’t mind.
I love it when my clients feel so comfortable with me that they fall asleep and snore. I love that I have the gift to put you at ease and make you forget your insecurities for that hour. Of course I’ll giggle a little when you give a really loud snort, but I don’t find your snoring offensive at all so please don’t apologize and just enjoy the relaxation.
As a massage therapist, my main goal is to be client-centered. I want to give your particular body what it needs at that particular time, whether it is a deep tissue massage to help relieve deep rooted tension or a relaxing massage to help relieve some stress. You need to voice your concerns and tell me exactly what you want, I am happiest after a massage when I know I have given you exactly what you wanted!
I really hope this helps to put you at ease and enjoy your next massage knowing, from my side, that I really really don’t mind!
